Start A Profitable Blog – First off, let me tell you that it’s a lucrative business to blog and that blogs are easy to set up and manage. Imagine getting paid to write about subjects that interest you, whenever you want, wherever you are! The flexibility involved allows you to maintain your blog at your own pace, and with Internet connection easily accessible all over the globe, even your vacation won’t stop you from blogging.
In this article, we’ll take a look at how to start a profitable blog and also set up one for yourself! Interested? Read on!
1. Create Free Blog or Self-Hosted Blog?
First, you need to get yourself a blog. There are several options – host a blog on your own domain or get a free one.
Yes, you can create a blog for free on many different platforms, such as:
For starters, let’s talk about the free blogs.
Blogger is actually owned by Google, so your contents will be detected by Google search engine faster and you will be indexed more quickly. WordPress.com, however, is a relatively new option and is better in the sense that it comes with more advanced features such as Trackbacks and Categories. You can also manage your sidebar links more efficiently (more about this later).
Again, if you are serious about starting a profitable blog, i will advice you avoid these platforms by all means because these platforms have total control over your content. Your account will be limited to very few generic designs, a “maximum” number of daily visits and limited storage thereby forcing you to upgrade into a “premium” or “unlimited” blog plan. Also if you accidentally violate your free blog provider’s Terms of Service, your account will be suspended indefinitely.
Nobody wants this kind of headache!!
This is the reason why most successful bloggers started their own self-hosted blog.
It’s considerably cheap, gives you access to your own personal domain name (e.g., www.yourname.com instead of www.yourname.blogging-platform.com), and you basically have no limitations.
Oh!! i didn’t tell you…….and you’ll have access to premium wordpress themes and design plugins that makes your new blog look like something created by a pro.
2. Get a Domain Name, Web Hosting & Setup Your Blog
To get started, you’ll only need three things:
- A Domain name – The web address of your blog (like www.webdots.com.ng)
- Web hosting – A server to store your blog files and keep it online for others to browse and read at all times.
- WordPress blog theme specifically designed for your focus niche
How to register a domain and hosting
If you’re signing up for hosting with HostGator as your web host, then you’ll follow the steps below:
Choose your HostGator web hosting package.
On the next page, you’ll be able to register a new domain. Just enter your domain name, choose the domain name extension, and HostGator will tell you if the domain is available.
One of the reasons i recommend Hostgator for the above task is because registering a domain name with a hosting account on Hostgator is the easiest option since everything about your website will live in one location. Also, they offer FREE domain name if you decide host it immediately.
Choose a PLAN
Here you can select the hosting plan you want to have. By default, it would pick the hosting package that you have selected in step 1.
In the “billing info” field, enter your address and phone number. Make sure you double check this information as they are going to call you on your provided mobile number to verify the intended purchase.
Here you can also select your payment method: PayPal or Credit card. If you select PayPal, on the next page, you will be redirected to the PayPal payment page.
In the additional service section, ensure you uncheck everything here.
Below the billing info, you can see the complete details of your order. Before you continue with the order, ensure you verify your order to be correct.
Once you conform your order to be correct, click on “Checkout.” Depending on your payment method, you will be taken to the PayPal payment page, or the “successful order placed” page.
In about a minute you will receive an email from Hostgator confirming your order, and within an hour you will be receiving a call with your new hosting account details.
Do you have your hosting login details now? Lets continue
Purchasing your domain name and hosting is the first step towards starting your blog. With your hosting and domain name taken care of, it’s time to install WordPress.
And here’s how to do it:
First, log in to your server via your control panel. (You should have been provided your login link, along with your username and password when you signed up.) ***Check your email for this
Next, locate a tool called ‘QuickInstall’.
Select ‘WordPress’, enter your relevant site details and click ‘Install’.
Once the installer is finished WordPress will be installed on your site. Just a few more steps and your site will be ready for the world
After you are done with the above tasks, you would have a login URL address that looks like the example below:
- www.example.com/wp-admin/ or www.example.com/wp-login/
- www.yourdomainname.com/wp-admin or www.yourdomainname.com/wp-login/
So, when you type the above into the browser, you will be presented with the below page:
Type in your username and password, on successful login, you will be presented with the main dashboard of your blog from where you can upload videos, images, publish stories e.t.c.
The next step is to install a Theme that will make your blog look professional. You can achieve this by buying premium WordPress themes from ThemeForest or Mythemeshop .
Once you buy the theme, download the ZIP. Then from your dashboard, click on ‘ ‘Appearance – themes’ and click on upload new theme. Upload the new ZIP file, install and activate the theme.
Go to your browser and try viewing the new site, the new design will be up and running.
You can watch the below video for more understanding.
Watch below video on how to achieve above
3. What you must do to be successful
(I) You need to be active on social media. Start first by opening a free Facebook and twitter account for your blog. Assuming the name of the blog is abcd.com; then register a free FB account page looking like this: www.facebook.com/abcd
This is necessary for branding purposes.
Another step to take is to open a free Facebook group. With a Facebook page, you can grow your your audience/followers/likes by placing Advert on Facebook and you must try to have nothing less than 500,000 likes/followers.
With a FB group, you are not going to use FB Ads to grow it, but by sharing it with friends and families and recommending it.
The advantage is that FB page has “reach limitations” ( if you have 100,000 followers, only 10% sees your post) and such scenario does not occur with an FB group.
So, from experience, make sure you have both to drive massive traffic to your blog. Also go to twitter, open a free account and then grow the followers.
(II) Publish news post regularly
Next, let’s look at the type of content that’s suitable for your blog in order to make it profitable. You need to understand that there is no fixed scope that your blog should have, which means you can write about whatever you’re interested in. Mind you, the difference between a profitable blog and a non-profitable one is the way you write.
So, to attract more visitors as well as to keep your current readers coming back for more, it’s very important to add a personal touch to your blog posts. This can be done by simply imagining that you’re talking with your personal friend. An extra bonus for your readers would be a great sense of humor, so try to add funny comments in your articles where relevant.
Another important point is to avoid addressing your reader as a plural unit. Don’t write as if you’re preparing a speech. Instead, write as if you’re having a conversation with a single person, an equal friend, because this will make your reader relate to you more easily.
Besides that, it’s also very useful to establish your own personality through your words. We’re very curious creatures, so naturally your visitors would want to know as much about you as the information you’re offering them.
Having a distinctive personality in your blog will make a world of difference between your blog about gadgets and all the other blogs about gadgets out there. This is a lot like creating your own brand name, where people immediately remember your blog’s name when they need information about gadgets, just like how people immediately think of Mr Bigg’s for fastfood or Nike for sportswear.
